13 OCT 07 - Sq18 Selected Gp2 Color Guard
by 1stLt Ha, CAP

Sq18 was the only San Francisco Bay Area unit to send a Color Guard team to the Group 2 Cadet Competition. Regardless, the participating cadets were evaluated in all areas prescribed in the official rules. For example, the Cadets ran a timed mile (above - l to r Cadet Sturgill, Cadet Sergeant Patel R, & Cadet Sergeant Cruz) that tests their physical agility. To ensure an impartial evaluation, two outside judges were brought-in.
The Sq18 Color Guard was thoroughly inspected on their uniform appearance. The judges-a CAP Captain & an Army Specialist (above - far left & far right), used the identical scoring standards as the official ones to evaluate the participants. The Cadets had spent a considerable amount of time & energy to make their uniforms look sharp. Although they were anxious, the Color Guard members stood tall during inspection.
The Cadets had practiced two-to-three-times-a-week before the Group 2 Competition. During the drill portion of the evaluation, they remembered the routines & applied them one-step-at-a-time. After their last "physical" practical, the participants were tested on their knowledge of Aerospace topics. The Cadets were pitted against a team composed of Senior Members. Needless to say, the youth members deftly defeated the adults! |

22 SEP 07 - Sq18 at Livermore Airport Event
by 1stLt Ha, CAP

The Livermore Airport held its annual Open House on Saturday, 22 September 2007. Although the clouds did not break-up until late afternoon, the morning rain did not deter anyone from having a good time. Brief aerial demonstrations as well as static displays kept the visitors interested, informed, & entertained. Parents brought their children to take a closer look at aircraft ranging from Vietnam War-era attackers to modern rescue helicopters.
Many flight-oriented organizations such as the Civil Air Patrol (CAP) had a display booth. Cadet Sq18 was invited to join Oakland Airport-based Senior Sq188 in setting-up an information & recruiting table. Sq188 brought a CAP search-&-rescue airplane & 4x4 vehicle to the booth. Sq18 had a foam display (above) complete with photos highlighting what the cadets had been doing recently.
A handful of Sq18 cadets (above) helped-out by talking to CAP booth visitors about the Cadet Program. They also got a chance to see up-close many of the static displays as well as check-out the controls of a CAP Cessna 182. The Cadets were joined by Sq18 Senior Members-SM Sturgill K, SM Sturgill T, & Lt Ha. Although the Open House attendance was slightly dampened by the rain, the Cadets still had a good time. |
