16 SEP 06 - Livermore Airport Open House
by 1stLt Ha, CAP

The 11th Annual Livermore Municipal Airport Open House was held on Saturday, 16 SEP 2006. The organizer of the event-Livermore Valley Airman's Association, requested the presence of the Squadron 18 Color Guard to perform during the opening ceremony. The Color Guard presented the colors. Although most of the prized planes were at the Reno Air Races, the open house had many historic & collectible aircrafts on display.
The respective commanders of the unit (above) manned the Squadron 18 information & recruiting table. Visitors to the Open House had the chance to find out more about the Civil Air Patrol Cadet Program & were handed pamphlets & Squadron 18 patches. Understandably, the free patches were picked-up quickly!
Squadron 18 cadets who served in the Color Guard (above) also were treated to an up-&-close look at the cockpit of the "Firecat" jet, a Czech-built L-39 that serves as a trainer in many foreign air forces. They met the pilot & owner-US Air Force veteran Rich Perkins. The cadets enjoyed touring the various static displays after the opening ceremony & were provided free lunch by the organizer of the open house.

Squadron 18 was proud to see twelve of its members attend California Wing Encampment 2006, held for eight days from 05 AUG to 12 AUG, at Camp San Luis Obispo (SLO) (above). Camp SLO serves as a training center for the California National Guard. It is nestled in the scenic hills of the central coast. Over 220 cadets participated in this time-honored tradition where countless young people are tested physically & mentally.

This year, the participating cadets were assigned to nine basic cadet flights & one Advanced Training Flight (ATF). The cadets were not only involved in routine physical training & team-building exercises, they got to fire the M-16A2 assault rifle & fly either in a CH-47 Chinook or a UH-60 Blackhawk.

Many Squadron 18 members served as part of the Encampment staff. C/Capt McCoy (Sq.18 Cadet Commander) was commander of ATF. C/Maj Crawford was assigned as Bravo Flight Commander of the 103rd Cadet Training Squadron (CTS). C/Capt Holmes & C/CMSgt Sutton served as Hotel Flight Commander & Flight Sergerant respectively, of the 105th CTS.
